This is the male luna moth that I am working with on the next part of my final for Drawing for Scientific Illustration. My professor wanted me to do a traditional orthographic view of him, and she also told me to just place him on the scanner and scan him (reference for later; they’re so delicate). And this was the result. I thought it was interesting enough to share.
Unfortunately, his antennae were destroyed before I even took him out of his triangle. I'm going to try to reconstruct them.
After discussing with my professor, we have decided to place both the female and the male moths in a vertical composition on the Root Phi, to be rendered with digital oils in Painter. My next update will be the line-work of this and my completed orthographic views of the male. The female construction can be seen in my portfolio page.
